Part 2: Why We Keep Coming Back
Mornings in the Mountains
There are very few places where the loudest sound in the morning is the breeze moving through the pine trees.
Burro Mountain Homestead is one of those places.
One of my favorite vacation traditions is waking up before everyone else, wrapping my hands around a hot cup of tea, and easing into the day with my Bible study. There is no rush to be anywhere and no long list of chores waiting to be checked off. Just a quiet mountain morning and time to reflect.
It’s amazing how peaceful life feels when you simply slow down.
Eventually, the campground begins to wake up. RV doors open. Coffee starts brewing. Friendly waves are exchanged as neighbors wander outside to enjoy another beautiful day.
It’s one of the many reasons we love camping.
People just seem…friendlier.
More Than a Campground
One of the things that keeps bringing us back to Burro Mountain isn’t just the beautiful setting.
It’s the people.
They have created something special here.
From the moment you arrive, you’re treated less like a customer and more like a guest.
By your second visit, you’re greeted by name.
By your third, it feels like you’re visiting old friends.
Then there’s Dewey.
If you’ve been to Burro Mountain, chances are you’ve met him.
He’s just one of those people who helps make this campground feel like home.
The hospitality here isn’t something you can manufacture.
It’s genuine.
And that’s becoming harder and harder to find these days.
A Trip into Silver City
No visit to Burro Mountain is complete without spending a little time exploring nearby Silver City.
We’ve grown quite fond of this charming little town.
Historic buildings line the streets, local shops invite you inside, and there’s an unmistakable sense of history around every corner.
It’s the kind of downtown that encourages you to park the car and simply wander.
You never know what you’ll discover next.
That’s one of our favorite ways to explore any town.
Without a schedule.
Without a destination.
Just walking.
Lunch at Little Toad Creek
One stop we always seem to enjoy is Little Toad Creek Brewery and Distillery.
Good food.
Great atmosphere.
And one of those places where you can easily lose track of time over good conversation.
The four of us settled in, ordered lunch, and did exactly what friends do best.
We laughed.
Shared stories.
Solved a few of life’s problems.
And probably created a few more.
Sometimes the restaurant itself becomes part of the memory.
Little Toad Creek is one of those places for us.
Finding Beauty Around Every Corner
One thing we love about Silver City is that you don’t have to look very hard to find something interesting.
Colorful murals.
Historic architecture.
Unique storefronts.
Even an enormous cowboy mural that somehow became one of everyone’s favorite photo stops.
Those unexpected discoveries are often the ones we remember most.
Not because they were famous.
But because they made us smile.
Back at Camp
By late afternoon, we found ourselves back where we were happiest.
At camp.
Chairs unfolded beneath the awning.
Cold drinks appeared.
Ki’Oni made his rounds, checking to make sure everyone was giving him the attention he deserved.
The conversation flowed effortlessly as the afternoon slowly gave way to evening.
There is something about mountain air that makes sitting outside feel like exactly where you’re supposed to be.
Nobody was looking at their phone.
Nobody was watching the clock.
Everyone was simply enjoying being together.
Dinner Beneath the Pines
One of my favorite memories from the trip wasn’t at a restaurant.
It wasn’t sightseeing…It wasn’t shopping….It was dinner around camp.
The smell of food cooking drifted through camp as we gathered beneath the awning.
As daylight faded, our little solar tiki torches came to life, giving the campsite a warm, cozy glow.
It’s funny the little traditions that develop over time.
Those tiki torches have become part of our camping setup, and somehow they always make the evening feel just a little more festive.
Good food somehow tastes even better outdoors.
Especially when it’s shared with good friends.
Evenings That Go By Too Fast
After dinner, no one seemed anxious to head inside.
We lingered around the campsite long after the dishes had been put away.
Stories turned into laughter.
Laughter turned into more stories.
The stars slowly filled the sky above us.
Those evenings are one of the reasons we continue choosing places like Burro Mountain.
There isn’t much entertainment.
No fancy attractions.
No packed itinerary.
Just conversations with people you care about.
Sometimes that’s more than enough.
Exactly What We Needed
As I climbed into bed that night, I couldn’t help but think about how different this trip felt from our everyday lives.
No deadlines….No meetings…No rushing from one thing to the next.
Just mountain air.
Wonderful friends.
And a place that somehow makes everyone slow down.
Sometimes the best vacations aren’t the ones where you do the most.
Sometimes they’re the ones where you finally give yourself permission to do a little less.
Tomorrow would bring more adventures.
But for now…
The mountain was quiet.
And life felt just about perfect.
