Some places become favorites not because they’re flashy, but because they simply make you feel at peace.
For years, we drove past Hilltop RV Park on nearly every trip to visit our granddaughters in New Braunfels. We never had a reason to stop. Like so many people still working full-time, we were always in a hurry to get there and just as anxious to get back home before work started again.
Then retirement changed our perspective.
We decided we no longer wanted to travel “hell-bent for election.” Instead of racing from one destination to the next, we wanted to enjoy the journey itself. So one afternoon, while driving through the area, I called ahead and reserved a site.
We’re certainly glad we did.
Now, if you’re looking for a luxury RV resort with lazy rivers, pickleball courts, and endless amenities, this probably isn’t the campground for you. But if you’re looking for a clean, quiet, welcoming place to spend the night—or maybe even a couple of nights—you might just discover what we did.
One overnight stay quickly turned into two nights simply because we didn’t feel like leaving.
One of the first things we noticed was how easy everything was. The park sits just off the freeway with excellent access, making it a stress-free stop for even the largest rigs. The entrance is wide, the office is easy to find, and check-in couldn’t have been simpler. The roads throughout the park are spacious, and the sites are long enough to comfortably accommodate big rigs with tow vehicles.
The little touches during check-in also made us smile. Along with our paperwork and campground map, we were handed bottled water, a trash bag, and even a small American flag. Throughout the park you’ll find state flags lining the roads and a massive American flag proudly flying over the campground.
One thing to know before you arrive—it’s called Hilltop for a reason. The campground sits high enough that there always seems to be a breeze. At least every time we’ve stayed, the wind has been gently blowing across the hill. For us, that’s part of its charm.
There is a walking trail that loops through the campground and extends into the surrounding desert landscape, along with a dog park and what we believe is a swimming pool. Truthfully, we’ve never spent much time exploring all the amenities. Most of our stays have only been a night or two, and we’d rather spend that time taking an evening walk or simply sitting outside and enjoying the peaceful views across the horizon.
It’s hard to explain exactly what makes Hilltop RV Park so special to us. It isn’t one spectacular feature. It’s simply the feeling you get when you’re there.
Sometimes, that’s enough.
If you’re traveling through the Fort Stockton area and need a comfortable place to stop for the night, we’d encourage you to give Hilltop RV Park a try. We’d love to hear if it leaves you with the same feeling it gives us.
