The Burnt Bean Co.
108 S Austin St
Seguin, Texas 78155
One of the greatest gifts retirement has given us is time.
When we visit our granddaughters in New Braunfels, our son and daughter-in-law are busy working during the day while the girls are in school. Instead of rushing back home like we did for so many years, we now have the freedom to explore the little towns and hidden gems surrounding the area.
One thing we’ve become exceptionally good at is finding new places to eat.
Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing…we’ll let our waistlines decide! 😄
On one of our adventures, we wandered into the small town of Seguin (pronounced suh-GEEN). Neither of us had ever been there, and we’d certainly never heard of a little barbecue restaurant called The Burnt Bean Co.
We found a parking spot and walked toward the entrance. There was already a line at the door, but it didn’t seem too bad. Inside, a large chalkboard listed the day’s menu, with a few items already crossed off. At the time, we didn’t think much about it.
Before long it was our turn to order.
One thing that caught us by surprise was the ordering process. At the first register you order your barbecue and side dishes. Once that’s complete, you’re sent to a second register to order drinks and desserts. It seemed a little unusual to us, but apparently it works because the line kept moving.
Then came the important partβthe food.
It was absolutely delicious.
Afterward, we told our son about this little BBQ place we’d discovered. His response surprised us.
“You actually got in?”
Apparently, every time they had tried to eat there, the wait had been well over an hour.
A few weeks later we returned for a second visit. Once again, we couldn’t believe our luck. Hardly any line at all! We ordered our favorites, tried another daily special, and once again enjoyed every bite. When we told our son we’d eaten there again, he couldn’t believe it.
Not long after that second visit, we learned why.
The Burnt Bean Co. had been voted the best BBQ in Texas.
Suddenly, our good fortune made a lot more sense.
Since then, we’ve driven by more than once only to find the line stretching out the door and around the corner. On those days, we’ve reluctantly headed somewhere else for lunch.
Was it worth waiting?
Absolutely.
The brisket taco is enough to make your mouth water before you even take the first bite. The bacon ranch potatoes are packed with flavor, and the chopped brisket sandwich has become one of Tracey’s favorites. They also offer outstanding daily specials, and if you get there early enough before they sell out, they’re definitely worth trying.
We’re not sure who gets to vote on the “Best BBQ in Texas,” but after eating here ourselves, we’d have to agree with the outcome.
If your travels bring you anywhere near Seguin, plan ahead, expect a line, and bring your appetite. You can even order online if you want to skip the wait.
Trust us…
It’s worth it.
