Sharing Our Happy Place: A Napa Valley Adventure with Friends Chapter 3

Part 3: The Memories We Brought Home

Sunday Morning in Wine Country

Sunday mornings always seem to have a different pace.

No alarm clocks.

No rushing out the door.

Just the quiet anticipation of another wonderful day together.

Coffee cups appeared one by one as everyone slowly wandered into the living room, still talking about the previous day’s adventures. Some of us were ready to tackle another day of wine tasting, while others were simply content enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Napa Valley.

Before heading out, we gathered to watch our church service online.

No matter where our travels take us, we love staying connected to our church family back home. There’s something comforting about beginning the day with worship and a message that centers our hearts before heading off on another adventure.

Then it was time for one of the experiences we had all been looking forward to.

All Aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train

If you’ve never experienced the Napa Valley Wine Train, it’s something every wine lover should add to their bucket list.

Stepping aboard feels like traveling back to a different era.

The beautifully restored vintage railcars, polished wood interiors, crisp white tablecloths, and attentive service create an atmosphere that’s both elegant and relaxed.

As the train slowly rolled through the vineyards, conversation paused every so often as everyone looked out the windows.

Rows upon rows of grapevines stretched across the valley floor.

Rolling hills framed the landscape.

It was impossible not to appreciate just how beautiful Napa Valley really is.

Breakfast was delicious, but honestly…

The scenery may have stolen the show.

One of the things I enjoy most about experiences like this is that no one feels rushed.

You aren’t driving….You aren’t checking directions….You simply sit back, enjoy the ride, and soak in every moment.

Grgich Hills Estate

One of our favorite stops during the Wine Train excursion was Grgich Hills Estate.

The winery has a rich history and an outstanding reputation, but what stood out most was the welcoming atmosphere.

By this point in the weekend, our group had developed its own rhythm.

There were inside jokes.

Favorite wines.

Friendly teasing.

And enough laughter that people probably assumed we’d all known one another forever.

That’s one of the unexpected gifts of traveling together.

Friendships deepen.

You learn things about people you never would have discovered over a dinner back home.

You share stories.

Dreams.

Life experiences.

Somehow, time away from everyday life creates space for conversations that simply don’t happen during our normal routines.

One Last Afternoon in Napa

Eventually, every great vacation begins winding toward home.

But before packing our suitcases, we had a few more stops to make.

No Napa trip would feel complete without visiting Caymus.

For us, it’s one of those wineries that has become part of our tradition whenever we’re in the valley.

It’s familiar.

Comfortable.

A place that always feels like coming back to an old friend.

Our final tasting took us to Black Stallion Estate Winery.

The views were spectacular, the wine was wonderful, and it felt like the perfect way to bring an unforgettable weekend to a close.

By now, our conversations had shifted.

No one was asking where we were going next.

Instead, we were already laughing about the moments we’d experienced together.

Michelle’s unforgettable “YAY ME!” in the spa.

Jerry’s nonstop comedy routine.

The limousine rides.

Long dinners.

Lazy evenings in the hot tub.

Morning coffee together.

Those are the moments that stay with you.

Packing More Than Suitcases

As we loaded luggage into cars and said our goodbyes, I realized something.

We weren’t just taking home bottles of wine.

We were taking home memories.

The older I get, the more I realize that the things we treasure most aren’t things at all.

They’re experiences.

Conversations.

Friendships.

Time.

You can always buy another bottle of wine.

You can’t recreate a weekend spent laughing with people you love.

Why Napa Will Always Be Our Happy Place

People often ask us why we return to Napa Valley so often.

The easy answer would be the wine.

Or the incredible restaurants.

Or the breathtaking scenery.

And while all of those things certainly play a part…

They aren’t the real reason.

The real reason is much simpler.

Napa has become the backdrop for some of our favorite memories.

It’s where we’ve celebrated milestones.

Introduced friends to wineries they’ll never forget.

Shared incredible meals around tables that seemed to get louder with every story told.

It’s where we’ve laughed until our sides hurt.

It’s where we’ve slowed down enough to appreciate the people sitting across from us.

Wine country has a way of reminding you that life isn’t meant to be rushed.

A great bottle of wine isn’t opened because it’s Tuesday.

It’s opened because you’re sharing it with someone who matters.

That’s the lesson Napa has quietly taught us over the years.

Sharing Our Happy Place

As Tracey and I reflected on this trip during our drive home, we both came to the same conclusion.

This wasn’t our best Napa vacation because of the wineries we visited.

It wasn’t because of the Wine Train.

Or the spa.

Or even the incredible meals.

It was our favorite because we experienced all of it alongside people we genuinely love.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about introducing friends to a place that’s meaningful to you and then watching it become meaningful to them as well.

Somewhere along the way, our favorite destination became part of someone else’s story too.

That may be our favorite souvenir of all.

Until Next Time

Will we return to Napa Valley?

Without question.

There are still wineries we haven’t visited.

Restaurants we want to try.

Sunsets we want to watch.

Conversations still waiting to happen.

But more importantly…

There are more friends we’d love to bring along.

Because if this weekend reminded us of anything, it’s this:

The best destinations aren’t defined by where they are.

They’re defined by who you’re with.

Every traveler has a happy place.

We’re grateful we found ours.

And even more grateful that we were able to share it.

Here’s to great wine…

Wonderful friends…

And the journeys that bring us all together.

Until next time,

Donna & Tracey
